You read that headline correctly: Master Chief is in Halo: Reach. In what capacity you might ask? Well it doesn't look like he's a playable character, but a recent post on Bungie.net clearly shows Master Chief and Cortana as options in the Halo: Reach Armory.

The picture, shown below, is said to include all of the Armory options that will be visible to players in the Armory for purchase on day 1. More will become available based on your rank and on the purchases you make.

t isn't made clear whether these are actual armor customization options or something else, such as effects or voices. You'll also notice these pictures sit near other classic Halo characters such as Sergeant Johnson and ODST's Buck. Erik Brudvig
